Where Being Fully Human Becomes the Most Powerful Thing You Can Do
The Question That Started Everything
More than fifty years ago, an Oriental Medicine Doctor and biomedical engineer named Dr. Y. King Liu asked a question that most institutions weren't ready for: what happens when you stop separating Eastern wisdom from Western science and let them become one conversation?

He didn't just ask it theoretically. He built a research university, developed biomedical prototypes, and created vocational programs that bridged what most of the world insisted on keeping apart. His work was decades ahead of its time — rooted in the understanding that the human system is not a machine to be fixed but a living field to be attuned.

That legacy is the ground we stand on.
In 2023, Dr. Stephanie Shelburne assumed leadership of the University of Northern California — the institution Dr. Liu built — and redirected it toward the original vision: bioenergetic coherence.
What We Are
The New England School of Bioenergetic Medicine is a nonprofit educational institute dedicated to a single purpose: helping human beings become more coherent — in themselves and in the worlds they influence.

Coherence is not calm. It is not balance in the passive sense. It is the state in which every dimension of a person — physical, mental, emotional, purposeful, and relational to the larger field — is resonating as one integrated system.

A human being who is coherent doesn't just feel well. They sense what data alone can't reveal. They make decisions that serve beyond the immediate. They bring something into a room that shifts the room itself.
We have always taught this. What has changed is the urgency.

Why Now?
We are living in the intelligence era. Artificial intelligence can process, predict, and create at breathtaking speed — and it is only accelerating. This is extraordinary. It is also incomplete.

Because for all its capability, AI cannot generate a unique bioenergetic signature. It cannot feel the resonance that tells you something is true before the data confirms it. It cannot bring multidimensional coherence to a relationship, a decision, or a room.

This is why our mission has never been more relevant. The world doesn't just need healthier humans. It needs coherent humans — people whose bioenergetic systems are optimized to navigate complexity, to sense what matters, and to work in genuine partnership with the world we've always been part of.
We do not transfer information.
We facilitate transformation.
How We Teach
Our programs are designed as journeys — not collections of credits. Every learner moves through a process that shifts not just what they know but who they are. We draw from biomedical science, quantum physics, consciousness studies, herbal energetics, somatic intelligence, and the living world itself.

We teach in small, intentional groups because coherence cannot be mass-produced.

A Pedagogy of Presence and Practice
Who We Serve
Our learners include holistic practitioners, healthcare providers, educators, organizational leaders, technologists, and individuals who sense that their capacity for life exceeds what they've been taught to access. They come from around the world.

What unites them is a readiness — a willingness to become students of their own lives and to do the work of genuine integration.

When they leave our programs, they don't just practice differently. They show up differently. In their homes, their workplaces, their communities.
Coherence is not a private achievement. It radiates.
Meet Our Team
The people behind this work aren't just educators — they're practitioners of what they teach. Each one brings a different lineage, a different lens, and a shared conviction that coherence isn't something you lecture about. It's something you live.
The Invitation
We are not building a school in the conventional sense. We are building a movement.

A movement of coherent humans — people who have optimized their own multidimensional systems and who carry that coherence into every relationship, every room, every room they enter. People who can work alongside AI without losing what makes them irreplaceable. People who understand that the future belongs not to the most technologically equipped but to the most bioenergetically integrated.
The better you become at being fully human, the more powerful everything around you becomes.
If that resonates — even as a quiet hum you can't quite explain — you're in the right place.
Find Your Depth
Our membership community is where this work comes alive. Three tiers — The Field, The Edge, and The Forge — each one meeting you where you are.

Our Institutional Home
The New England School of Bioenergetic Medicine operates as a program of the University of Northern California (UNC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit institution founded in the mid-1990s by Dr. Y. King Liu.

The UNC Foundation, also established by Dr. Liu, supports the institute through grants, donations, and philanthropic contributions.

The school maintains an academic affiliation with Saybrook University for students seeking accredited pathways through our Nature Based Therapeutics and Applied Bioenergetic Medicine programs.
Our books are published through Three Pools Publishing, an imprint of UNC.
The Farm

Our Farm Immersive experiences take place on a working farm in New England — open land, forest, and field where the teaching comes alive in the body, not just the mind.

The animals are not background. Ponies, draft horses, miniature cows, ducks, chickens, turkeys, and rabbits serve as co-facilitators in this work. They teach what words cannot.

Quarterly Farm Immersives bring small groups to the land for 3–5 days of embodied practice, somatic work, and encounter with the living systems that hold us.
